Oral Health Assessments (Check up)

When it comes to maintaining good oral health, prevention is always better than cure. As a patient at The Essex Dental Clinic, you will be given comprehensive oral health assessments or check-ups to regularly assess the health of your teeth, gums, soft tissues and to identify any issues concerning occlusion (how your lower and upper teeth meet). These assessments enable our team to identify and treat problems as soon as they occur or even prevent potential problems altogether. We also routinely screen every patient for oral cancer during these oral health assessments. You will be advised by our dentist as to how frequently you should attend a dental check-up – the frequency will depend on your oral health.

Before we embark on any treatment plan, you will be given a full explanation of your treatment options, as well as a detailed estimate of how much your treatment will cost. If you ever have any questions about your assessments or treatment, please let us know and one of our team will be happy to answer them.

Our experienced Dental Hygienist will give you advice about all aspects of good oral health maintenance, including teeth brushing, flossing, interproximal cleaning (cleaning between your teeth), smoking cessation and diet advice. A regular appointment with our hygienist can help to maximise your oral health by treating conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis (both forms of gum disease). It may also be possible to brighten your smile by removing stains caused by drinking tea or coffee, as well as smoking.

Our Dental Therapist can carry out all of the duties performed by a Dental Hygienist, as well as carrying out simple fillings on adults and children, extractions of deciduous (baby or milk) teeth, and take X-rays and impressions.

At The Essex Dental Centre, we will place amalgam fillings in posterior teeth on the NHS. Otherwise, we will try to use aesthetic composites to maintain the natural appearance of your teeth. We understand that this is particularly important to patients wishing to achieve an aesthetically-pleasing end result which will blend in well against their surrounding teeth.

We are able to fit inlays in precious metal, gold or porcelain. We also offer mercury free fillings.

Diet Advice

All patients attending The Essex Dental Centre are given dietary advice to help them maintain a healthy mouth. This advice could include ways to prevent decay or the effects of acid erosion, for example. There is an experienced dietician and nutritionist in the adjoining Evergreen Clinic, so we can treat our more severe cases in a multi-disciplinary way, if appropriate.

Occlusion/TMJ dysfunction

Occlusion is the way in which our upper and lower jaws connect. At The Essex Dental Clinic, we typically treat occlusal dysfunction – in other words, problems with how the jaws meet - using occlusal splint therapy.

We also help patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder – also known as TMJ Dysfunction – which is the chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint which connects the mandible to the skull. Symptoms typically include difficulty or discomfort when biting or chewing; a clicking, popping or grating sound when opening or closing the mouth; a dull, aching pain in the face; headaches, migraines or earaches (particularly in the mornings), as well as a host of other problems. The osteopath in the adjoining Evergreen Clinic has an interest in TMJ dysfunction, which means that we are able to take a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment.
